Just departed a 5 night stay at the Nam Hai hotel. Can only say good things. I'd been concerned after reading some less than favorable things about the place on this site. But I'm glad I went with it. They were prompt and responsive to each of my several e-mails with questions.

My room was on the 5th floor. It was spacious and comfortable, with wood floors, a sitting area and flowers each day. Free in-room cable internet. I also had a nice city-view

Staff – very helpful, friendly and genuine. Probably some of the best staff I have met in Vietnam, certainly in Hanoi. Great with questions about the area, directions . They are what really makes this place.

We would stay there again if we ever get back to Hanoi.

“Value for money hotel in old quarter of Hanoi

I stayed in this hotel based on the recommendations from friends who had been here before. We got a double room that didn't quite have a window but this was not a problem as there was enough ventilation and there's nothing much to see outside.

First thing I noticed was that the rooms was fully paneled with wood. All the walls were wood, all the furniture and even the ceiling was wood. The only place that was not wood was the washroom. This gave the room a woody quite different feel, almost warm rustic feel. Also, the washroom was equipped with a pretty new high tech shower cubicle that seemed to have a hundred buttons (ok, it was more like 15), that had different functions, including 1 that would turn the cubicle into a steam room. The room was clean and didn't have any funny or smoky smell which is sometimes a problem with older hotels.

The staff is also very friendly and helpful but only a few of them understand English to any decent degree. The hotel is also a travel agent so you can book your day tours or tours elsewhere right from the front desk. Do note that breakfast in Hanoi ends around 9:00am so if you wake up late, there might not be any more food left.

The hotel's location in the old quarter of Hanoi makes a lot of things within walking distance, including the lots of food, some temples, the water puppet show and shopping. Finally, as they were having a 20% discount promotion when I was there, this really made the place value for money. Overall, this is a placed I would come back to again and recommend to my friends. It is a good tourist hotel, although business travelers with a bigger budget looking for more amenities might have to look elsewhere.

Also, do note that the Nam Hai Hotel has also expanded and there now also exists Nam Hai 1 and Nah Hai 2 Hotels, also in different locations in the old quarter of Hanoi.

“Clean, helpful and affordable”

I stayed at Nam Hai Hotel twice, once in 2006 and then in 2007. The place is clean and has the basic necessities. The staff are also very helpful and went beyond the call of duty. They helped me arrange a last minute tour to Ha Long Bay. There is free internet on Ground Floor too. I would definitely stay there again.

“Met Expectations”

Stayed at the Nam Hai for two nights in November and even booked an 11 day custom made tour through them. Had a triple room with three clean single beds, armoire, working fridge and a full size bathroom. Odd thing was that we noticed that the bathroom did not have shower curtains, which caused some flooding. Not a problem, more of a nuisance. Staff were professional (for Vietnamese standards) and their free breakfast had a decent selection. Location was a bit off from Hoan Kiem Lake but still walkable. Taxi's are cheap and plentiful so locale isn't that important. Ask for a room in the back to avoid the constant honking on the streets. Free internet could be slow b/c the staff use it to play games.

Hint: you can bargain down the room rate. They initially quoted $30 and we got it down to $22 US. Anything is possible in Vietnam.

Off note: tour was reasonablly priced and most of the services promises were provided. Got Halong-Hue-Hoian-Nha Trang-Saigon for $430 US for 11 days (flight, hotels, transfers).

Keep your expectations within Vietnamese standards and you will be very pleased.

“good value Vietnamese Hotel”

We enjoyed our stay at the Nam Hai. It was clean, staff friendly. Free internet (when staff weren't playing games)! Our room was pleasant with 2 windows and separate bathroom. Beds a little hard, but not a problem for us. I noticed one of the other rooms was a tad smaller and had only one small window. Breakfast was toast and jam or eggs (n/a due to bird flu last Nov) or soup (the best choice). Good location- opposite cylco restaurant more/less. Booked a tour to Perfume Pagoda through hotel which was excellent and very cheap at $US10 for whole day lunch included. Also hired pushbikes for $1 or $2 per day. Now that's an experience! I am staying there again in July.
